Ultimate Laptop Processor Guide (Intel)

The most important part we spend the most time in selecting while buying a new laptop is the processor and we are not wrong. The naming of most processors is at the very least confusing. In this post, we will see the naming scheme of Intel laptop processors. There is a lot more to a processor than just the frequency(GigaHertz) it runs at.

10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10310Y processor SKU number graphics

i3, i5, i7 and i9
This is the most obvious one, larger the number better the performance. The difference in all these series is the cache size. It starts with 3MB and can go up to 16MB in consumer-grade processors or even 256MB in servers.

Generation
The next is a 4-5 digit number that follows. The first digit gives the generation of the processor and first two digits in case of the tenth generation which is the latest. The tenth generation processor laptops have just entered the markets. Even though one generation difference doesn't make much difference the prices of the older drops as the new generation hits the market so the 9th generation laptops are cheaper now.

The letter at the End
The letter at the end of the processor name is the most mysterious one and confusion one. You must have seen a letter Y, U, H, HQ, HK, K.
Y - Extremely low power(Found in ultrabooks or convertible for more battery life)
U - Ultra-low power (Found in ultrabooks for more battery life)
H - High-performance graphics (Found in entry-level gaming laptops but provide a significant upgrade over the Y and U series ones)
HQ - High-performance graphics, quad-core (This is also found in Gaming Laptops although the Q might not be always mentioned on product pages even though the processor has 4 cores)
HK - High-performance graphics, unlocked (This is the highest-end processor in laptops and found in the thickest of gaming laptops as it requires a lot of cooling as this is also over-clocking capable)
K - Unlocked (This is the fully unlocked processor with the overclocking capability and is only desktop class. This cannot be found in laptops)

Hyper-Threading
This is a feature where a single core can act as dual core with virtualization for more multicore performance. This is available even in the i3 models.

TurboBoost
This is a feature where the processor can work above its maximum clock speed for a short amount of time which will give the boost for a short time to push the workload.
